The five-story pagoda of Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa

One of the most popular stops on the Red Course is Asakusa, home to Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple, Senso-ji. This district preserves the vibe of an older Tokyo (Shitamachi), distinct from the glass towers of Shinjuku.

The Kaminarimon Gate

The bus drops you a short walk from the iconic "Thunder Gate" (Kaminarimon). The massive red lantern hanging here is the symbol of Asakusa. Photo Op: Stand slightly to the side to avoid the main throng of tourists for a selfie.

Nakamise Shopping Street

Between the gate and the main hall lies Nakamise-dori.

  • What to Buy: Folding fans, yukata, chopsticks, and traditional crafts.
  • What to Eat: Ningyo-yaki (doll-shaped sponge cakes filled with red bean paste) and Senbei (rice crackers).

Senso-ji Main Hall

Approaching the main hall, you'll be enveloped in the scent of incense.

  • The Ritual: Locals wave the incense smoke over their bodies, believing it has healing powers.
  • Omikuji: Try your luck with a paper fortune. If it's bad, tie it to the designated wires to leave the bad luck behind.

Nearby Attractions

If you have time before the next bus:

  1. Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center: Go to the 8th-floor observation deck (free!) for a bird's-eye view of Nakamise Street.
  2. Kappabashi Kitchen Town: A 10-minute walk away, famous for realistic plastic food samples—a great unique souvenir.

Bus Station Details

The Hop-On Hop-Off stop is usually located near the main intersection or the Tobu Asakusa station. Look for the distinct red bus stop sign.
