Stone bridge and white watchtower at the Imperial Palace

In the center of the chaotic city lies a massive green void on the map: the Imperial Palace. While the Emperor's private grounds are generally closed, the East Gardens (Kokyo Higashi Gyoen) are open to the public and free to enter.

The Bus Route View

As the bus drives around the palace moat, you get spectacular views of the massive stone walls (some of the finest examples of Japanese masonry) and the famous Nijubashi Bridge from a distance.

Hopping Off: The East Gardens

The nearest stop is usually around the Marunouchi or Otemachi area. From there, enter through the massive Otemon Gate.

Highlights

  1. Foundation of the Main Tower: Climb the massive stone base where the main keep of Edo Castle once stood. It burned down in 1657 and was never rebuilt, but the scale of the foundation gives you an idea of its immensity.
  2. Ninomaru Garden: A beautiful traditional Japanese strolling garden with a pond, iris garden, and tea house.
  3. Hyakunin-bansho (Guardhouse of 100): A long wooden structure that once housed 100 elite guards.

Why Visit?

  • It's Free: One of the best free attractions in Tokyo.
  • Quiet: It’s surprisingly silent compared to the traffic just outside the walls.
  • Botany: Each prefecture of Japan donated a tree to these gardens, making it a botanical map of the country.

Important Note

  • Closed Days: Mondays and Fridays (usually). Always check the schedule before hopping off!
  • Bag Check: There is a security check at the entrance.
