Ueno Park Guide: Museums, Zoo & Temples

The Museums

If you love museums, you could spend a week here.

• Tokyo National Museum: The oldest and largest in Japan. Houses samurai armor, kimono, and ancient artifacts.
• National Museum of Nature and Science: Great for kids (dinosaur skeletons!) and science geeks.
• National Museum of Western Art: Designed by Le Corbusier, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ueno Zoo

Famous for its Giant Pandas. Be prepared for a queue to see them, but the rest of the zoo is also charming and historic (it opened in 1882).

Ameyoko Market

Just south of the park/station is Ameyoko, a bustling street market.

• Originally a black market for candy ("Ame-ya") and American goods ("Ame") after the war.
• Today, it shouts with fishmongers, sneaker shops, and discount clothing.
• Great for street food: Try the kebab or fruit on a stick.

Shinobazu Pond

A large pond covered in lotus plants. You can rent swan boats here. In the center stands the Bentendo temple, dedicated to the goddess of the arts and knowledge.
